Media Lab and Makerspace

Calling all creators, inventors, tech-savvy people, and not so tech-savvy people. Use our Makerspaces and Media Lab to explore, learn, and make something great!

Visit our Media Lab offering equipment for producing music, podcasts, videos, and more!

The John and Ann Gourley Media Lab provides our community members access to audio and video equipment for their digital projects. The Media Lab is located on the main floor of the Truro Library.

All patrons with a valid library card (in good standing) may use the Media Lab. The Lab will be available for 2-hour reservable time slots. Members 13+ may use the Lab unassisted, while anyone younger needs to be with an adult. Up to four people may be in the Lab at one time. The person who makes the reservation must be present in the room.

The main user (the person who makes the reservation) must complete a Lab orientation prior to use.

Equipment includes:

  • Digital camera
  • Video camera
  • Tripod
  • Umbrella lights
  • Green screen
  • Audio input
  • Midi keyboard
  • Condenser microphone
  • Digital drum kit
  • Studio monitors
  • Headphones
  • iMac computer with recording and photo and video editing software

Electric and digital instruments, which may be plugged in, are permitted at controlled volumes.

Due to sound considerations, most acoustic instruments may be used at the discretion of library staff. The lab’s midi keyboard with drum pad can imitate most of these instruments.

You will need your own storage devices (Mac compatible). Files and work cannot be saved on library equipment as all files are deleted daily.

Gather, invent, and learn in our Malcolm and Charlotte MacQuarrie Maker Lab and our maker programs offered across our region. Our free 3D printers, software, vinyl cutters, and other tools will help you create pretty much anything you can imagine.

What is a Makerspace?

The idea behind makerspaces is simple: they are places where people can come together to learn about technology, crafts, and other kinds of making as well as share knowledge and skills with others, and to apply this knowledge and skill by creating things.

The Malcolm and Charlotte MacQuarrie Maker Lab is located on the main floor of the Truro Library.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions the Maker Lab is currently closed.

If you have questions about any Maker equipment, services or programs, please email info@cehpubliclibrary.ca.
